Special Educational Needs
Special Needs at St Giles Church of England Primary School
At St Giles Church of England Primary School, Matlock we are passionate about ensuring that the needs of all children are met in a fully inclusive way and have a wealth of experience in supporting children with a range of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We have high expectations and aspirations for all pupils and aim to give all pupils the support they need to succeed, develop a love for learning and thereby prepare them for their next steps in education and life. To achieve this goal we currently have four mixed ability classes where teachers provide work that is differentiated to match the ability of groups or individual children and support staff, resources and materials are effectively deployed. Our school building is fully accessible for pupils and parents who have physical disabilities and we have disabled toilet facilities.
If your child has a Special Need, disability or additional needs the Graduated Approach of:” assess, plan, do, review,” as recommended in the 2015 Special Needs Code of Practice, is used to ensure that progress is made and inclusion is achieved. Children who come to the school with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities will be placed on the school SEN Provision Map and an informal meeting will be arranged for you to meet the Special Educational Needs Coordinator and class teacher to discuss the needs of your child and the type of provision that we would put in place. This procedure is also followed when a special need is identified in a pupil who is already attending the school.
Where appropriate an IEP, SEND support plan or intervention programme will be set up with achievable and measurable targets, thus ensuring that the child makes good progress. These plans are reviewed regularly and we are working towards parents and children being part of this review and target setting process. If your child requires specialist support from an outside agency eg: Educational Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapist, Counsellor, Physiotherapist, Occupational therapist, we would work in partnership with you to obtain the specialist support and ensure that the needs of your child are the central focus.
